Here is a sample of pearl tatting. The pearl stitch combination I used is two double stitches between the picots on both sides of the chain. I created the trefoil in the center first, then did another row of pearl tatting connected to the top of the small rings of the trefoil. I then used a faggoting stitch to fill in the space between row #1 and #2. Instructions are included below the picture.

Here is another sample of a motif entitled "Star of David". I first made three rings separated by pearl tatted chains. BUT I did not connect the last chain to the first ring. I made another set just like the first and did not connect. Then I wove the two broken motifs in and around each other. Then I attached the ends. I then proceeded to make the peach center, making sure to join the rings to the pearl tatted chains as I went along.

The easiest way to do Pearl Tatting is with 2 ball threads and one shuttle. Each ball thread stays to it's own side.
Using the shuttle and a ball thread do 1 ds, flip the whole piece over and using the other ball thread do 1 ds. Keep flipping side to side and doing the ds's. The shuttle thread never shows so it really doesn't matter what color it is. If the ball threads are different colors, it will look zipper-like. If you don't pull the ball thread really tight between stitches it will leave long, decorative loops.
